Dirty Rice

Growing up, dirty rice was a staple side dish or a main meal any day of the week. This Louisiana and southern classic is filled with a combination of ground pork, ground beef, the holy trinity of onions, bell peppers and celery, and Cajun spices rolled into steaming rice for a savory finish.

What makes dirty rice so popular in the south is in addition to it being so good and easy to make, it’s incredibly cheap! Simple ingredients come together to make an economical meal perfect for any weekday family meal or holiday spread accompaniment.

Dirty Rice Ingredients

  • White Rice
  • Ground Beef
  • Ground Pork
  • Onion
  • Bell Pepper
  • Celery
  • Chicken Broth
  • Cajun Seasoning
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Cayenne
  • Bay Leaves
  • Parsley
  • Flour
  • Cooking Oil

How to Make Dirty Rice

  1. Cook rice per package ingredients and set aside.
  2. Heat cooking oil in a cast iron skillet over medium high heat.
  3. Add in ground beef and ground pork/sausage, and season with all spices, and sauté.
  4. As the meat cooks, stir in holy trinity.
  5. Once the meat is fully cooked and vegetables softened, Stir flour to coat the meat.
  6. Add in chicken broth and bay leaves.
  7. Allow skillet ingredients to simmer for 5-10 minutes over medium low heat.
  8. Fold in cooked rice and parsley.
  9. Turn off heat and let stand for 5 minutes.
  10. Taste and continue to season as needed.
